Dunamis Construction Group was engaged by Phoenix Civil & Earthmoving to deliver the full civil scope for the reconstruction of the Brand Highway / Hunter Road intersection — a Main Roads Western Australia infrastructure upgrade in the Wheatbelt region.
The works required reconstruction of the junction to current road authority standards across four primary work packages — earthworks, drainage, pavement and surfacing, and traffic facilities — all delivered under a schedule of rates / bill of quantities contract while maintaining live traffic conditions on an active public road throughout.
Earthworks
Vegetation clearing and topsoil removal across approximately 5,080m², removal of redundant pavement (1,371m²) and redundant seal (437m²), embankment foundation compaction in widenings and subgrade preparation across 3,855m², disposal of excess cut material offsite, and topsoil respreading across 2,258m² to rehabilitate all disturbed areas.
Drainage
Construction of table drains, independently graded drains, and surface drains to culvert outlet. Installation of a 1,200 x 375mm reinforced concrete box culvert (14.1m) with reinforced concrete end treatments. Construction of 82m of new kerbing.
Pavement & Surfacing
Full pavement build-up across the intersection footprint — 220mm thick gravel subbase across approximately 3,540m², 235mm thick gravel basecourse across approximately 2,890m², and prime coat with 40mm dense graded asphalt wearing course (PMB, 14mm aggregate) across approximately 2,560m².
Traffic Facilities
Supply and installation of all new regulatory, warning, and street name signage including advance direction signage for Hunter Road, Dandaragan Road, and Brand Highway. Removal, relocation, and replacement of all existing signage and guide posts. Full pavement marking including barrier lines, edge lines, audio tactile edge lines, give way and continuity lines, and raised pavement markers.
Miscellaneous
Construction of 140mm thick N32 reinforced concrete infill to splitter island across 60m².
Semi mountable kerbing
DCG delivered the Hunter Road Intersection Upgrade two weeks ahead of the contracted programme — achieving full MRWA specification compliance on first inspection.

Live Traffic Environment
All works were completed under live traffic conditions on an active Brand Highway intersection. Comprehensive traffic management was implemented throughout, with four dedicated traffic controllers managing vehicle movements and maintaining public and worker safety across all phases of the works.
Programme Pressure
The project was delivered in the lead-up to the Christmas period — a time when Main Roads Western Australia restricts roadworks on the network to reduce traffic incidents over the holiday break. With a hard programme deadline driven by the seasonal shutdown, DCG responded with disciplined scheduling, tight work package sequencing, and proactive quality management — including soil testing, survey controls, and inspection hold points throughout — to complete all works ahead of the restriction period without compromising quality or safety.
Specification Compliance
Delivering to full MRWA specification on a live public road intersection required precision across every stage — from subgrade preparation through to final trim grading and asphalt surfacing. GPS/UTS controlled grading achieved the required surface tolerances, eliminating rework and keeping the downstream surfacing programme on track.
